Follow Up #4 - Flea
|
| |
| Toolalla Kennels recently caught up with Debbie
Sodeau and her coolie Flea. Hillbilly Flea was born 18/04/00 from
Toolalla Ted and Toolalla Edie and holds the title of
2002 Australian Agility Dog (ADAA). Debbie believes that working
dogs should be worked and if they aren’t bred with that foremost in
mind, it will be lost like many other breeds.
Since Debbie lives in Brisbane where it’s virtually impossible to run
stock, she focuses on Agility and has made a big impact in the sport.

Debbie is interested in breeding from Flea after
October 2005, and is very cautious when selecting a suitable sire. The
four main considerations when choosing the right breeding partner
are:
- Three generations of Coolie on both sides
- Calm temperament
- Proven sire with no blind or deaf pups
- Short coat.

| "When I first started looking for
a dog, I knew it was for Agility and looked at a lot of breeds. I was
talking to an Australian Shepherd breeder about hip and elbow scores etc
and she said if I wanted a dog that never broke down from injuries, I
should get a Coolie. That was nearly eight years ago. Man was it hard to
find one in those days!
The woman was right. None of my dogs have had an
injury since I got them. They go to the vets for a C5 each year and
that’s it."

| "Coolies are quick on their feet
and very intelligent…this I don’t need to tell you. An agility course is
21 obstacles to be completed properly in numerical order in the
allocated course time which is usually under 60 seconds. My Flea
finishes in 25 seconds.
She may not always ‘go clear’ but she loves it. Me
on the other hand…I usually cross the finish line in about 40
seconds…well alright…45 and gasping for breath.”
