Coolie Koolie Dogs

[breeding philosophy of toolalla kennels]

It’s quite interesting to see the difference between our coolies many years ago compared to the coolies we breed today. In the past, a lot of our coolies were much smaller, with shorter legs and a longer coat. Over the years, we’ve bred selectively, striving to breed coolies that are darker in colour with good all over merle coverage. We bred to increase the length of the legs and to shorten the coat.

Years ago it wasn’t all that uncommon to get the occasional pure white pup in a litter and as most people are aware, this can result in all kinds of problems ranging from deafness to blindness.

We’ve worked diligently and successfully to eliminate this problem from our coolies. Any pup that presented too much white was promptly destroyed.

Not surprisingly, we’ve copped a lot of flack for destroying puppies that weren’t up to standard. Some people believe that no coolie should ever be killed. But because of our tough stance and strict set of requirements, we can proudly say we haven’t bred a white pup (or one with any abnormalities) in over 6 years.

We’ve managed to breed the type of coolie today that 30 years ago, we one day hoped to achieve.
